Test first, then sell
A flat battery in a Waterford car park is rarely a mystery. Short hops, wet weather and stop-start systems finish a cheap unit by February. We test the battery, the starter and the alternator before anything leaves the counter.
A battery that is fine and an alternator that is dying is a comeback we would rather not have.
Flooded, EFB or AGM
Exide and Bosch cover most of what is on Irish and UK roads: Golfs, Transits, 4x4s, tractors. Standard flooded, EFB and AGM are different spec. We will not drop a flooded battery into a stop-start car because it is what is on the shelf.
| Type | Typical car | Do not mix |
|---|---|---|
| Flooded | Older cars without stop-start | Not for most stop-start systems |
| EFB | Many stop-start hatches | Check the spec on the old unit |
| AGM | Start-stop, bigger electrical load | Do not replace with flooded |
Which depot
Bring the vehicle if it will move. We would rather test it on the car than guess from a part number. If you are collecting only, bring the make, model and year, and the old battery if you have it.
- Passenger batteries: Grattan Quay, 051 873777
- Van, truck and agri batteries: Newrath, 051 857666
- Test first, then fit or supply
Parts on the Newrath counter
Newrath also holds a working range of parts: wiper blades, filters, spark plugs and clutches. It is not a motor factor with every line in the book. If we have it, you can have it today. If we do not, we will tell you.
Fitting or supply only
If the car will roll in, we test and fit. If you are taking a battery away, we still want the old one for test and return where we can. Do not leave a used battery in a shed. Bring it back.
What to have ready
- The vehicle if it will move
- Make, model and year if you are collecting only
