Winter tyres on Irish roads
There is no Irish law that says you must fit winter tyres. That is the first thing we tell people who have just driven a German hire car. What we do have is rain, freeze-thaw, and a ring road that polishes in January. Compound still matters.
A summer tyre is built for temperatures above about 7°C. Below that the tread goes hard, wet braking stretches, and a frost morning on the N25 feels greasy. A winter tyre (look for the three-peak mountain snowflake, 3PMSF) stays supple in the cold and bites in slush. All-season tyres with 3PMSF sit in the middle. That is what we fit on a lot of Waterford cars that never see a ski pass.
When we actually fit winter tyres
Dedicated winters make sense if you keep a second set and drive regularly in snow or mountain work, or you have a light rear-drive car that is miserable on a January commute. For a family hatch that lives in the city and does the Cork road, a good wet-grip summer or a marked all-season is what we fit most.
Mud-terrain on a school-run SUV is a noisy wet-weather compromise. An all-terrain such as a BF Goodrich KO2 is the middle path we put on pickups. Commercial and agri sizes stay a Newrath quote. Slurry and silage are not a winter-tyre conversation.

Do not mix compounds on an axle
Two winters on the front and two summers on the rear is how cars swap ends. If you are changing two, tell us what is already on the other axle. New rubber still goes on the rear in the wet unless we have a documented reason not to.
If you already know the size, buy the set in the shop. If you want us to look at the others, check tracking, or quote a mixed axle, make an enquiry. You do not pay the workshop job through Stripe.
Questions we get at the counter
Are winter tyres legal in Ireland?
Yes. They are not required. They must still meet load, speed and tread-depth rules like any other tyre.
Can I leave winters on all year?
You can. They wear faster in a warm summer and can feel vague. Most of our customers who buy winters keep a second set.
Is M+S the same as 3PMSF?
No. M+S is a manufacturer mark. 3PMSF is a tested snow performance mark. If you want a winter or all-season that actually works in the cold, look for the mountain snowflake.
