How to choose alloy wheels

Style is the last decision. A wheel that does not match the hub, the offset or the load rating is a safety problem, not a look.

Four numbers before the colour

PCD (the bolt pattern, such as 5x112), offset (ET), centre bore, and load rating. Get any of those wrong and the wheel either will not go on, will stress the hubs, or will sit too far inboard or outboard of the arch. Tom Geraghty Tyres has sold alloys since 1990; the reason the Grattan Quay showroom exists is so those numbers are checked on a real car, not a photo.

PCD is not interchangeable. A 5x112 VW/Audi/Mercedes pattern is not a 5x114.3 Honda/Hyundai pattern. Adapters exist; we treat them as an engineering choice, not a workaround.

Bigger is not always better on Waterford roads

Bigger diameter usually means a lower-profile tyre. That often looks better in a car park and rides worse on the river roads. The extra inch also costs a set of tyres, not just the rims. If you want presence without destroying comfort, 17" or 18" on a family car is the range we fit most. 19" and 20" belong on cars that already left the factory that way, or on drivers who accept the trade.

What we actually stock

OE brands such as Borbet, Ronal and Autec are built to the same plants that supply Mercedes, Audi, VW and Ford. Aftermarket Brock and RC Design cover a huge spread of PCDs at a sharper price. Revolution is the motorsport line for Mk2 Escorts and the Irish rally paddock. Replica wheels exist; if you buy them, buy them from someone who knows the offset.

Buy a design in the shop when you know the fitment. Make an enquiry when you do not. Wheel-and-tyre packages are quoted as a job. Ask Dave.

Questions we get at the counter

Will a 5x112 wheel fit my Honda?

Not without an adapter, and we will not sell that as a casual upgrade. Check the PCD on the hub or in the shop filters by car make.

Can I keep my old tyres?

Only if they match the new rim diameter and still have legal tread. A 16" tyre does not go on an 18" wheel.

Shop or send an enquiry

If you already know the size or the wheel, pay in the shop. If you want us to read it off the car, make an enquiry. We call you back.
